Dropping the Torch with Nicholas Sarantakes

Author Nicholas Evan Sarantakes, Ph. D., will discuss his new book Dropping the Torch: Jimmy Carter, the Olympic
Boycott, and the Cold War at Portsmouth Free Public Library on Saturday, June 2 at 2 PM.  Dropping the Torch
offers a diplomatic history of the 1980 Olympic boycott.  Broad in its focus, it looks at events in Washington, D.C., as well as the opposition to the boycott and how this attempted embargo affected the athletic contests in Moscow.

Dr. Sarantakes created the U.S. Diplomatic History Resource Index, a website that served as a guide to material on the internet relevant to diplomatic history
while he was in graduate school. He also administers a blog on career management issues for historians. In 2009, Dr. Sarantakes became the history book review editor for Presidential Studies Quarterly. He has previously taught at Texas A&M University—Commerce, the Air War College, the
University of Southern Mississippi, and the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College.  Dr. Sarantakes is Associate Professor in the Department of Strategy & Policy at the U.S. Naval War College.

This program is free and open to the public.  Seating is limited so please call the Library at 683-9457 or stop by to register.
