Supported by a grant from the Portsmouth Public Education Foundation (PPEF), two classes from Elmhurst Elementary engaged in a year-long project to learn about the Sakonnet River and its biodiversity. Students obtained a deeper knowledge of the river by collecting specimens, setting up classroom aquariums, conducting research, and writing letters to various people and organizations who use and protect this body of water. They would like to develop community awareness about the need to preserve and protect this incredible natural resource. On display in the Portsmouth library in October are watercolors of the organisms they researched with related poetry. At a reception held on Saturday, October 2nd from 2:00-4:00 p.m. the fourth grade student's research Powerpoint will be available for viewing along with the first grade student research projects. Community members are cordially invited to attend and learn more about this bountiful natural resource through the wonderful work of these young Portsmouth environmentalists.
