UPDATED: Firefighters Use Jaws of Life to Rescue Man After 3-Vehicle Crash

Two people were transported to nearby hospitals Wednesday after a three-vehicle crash on East Main Road. 

Firefighters and police were called to the three-vehicle crash, which occurred at 4:26 p.m. on East Main Road at Henry Danis Court. 

A 57-year-old woman, who sustained minor injuries, was transported to Newport Hospital by Tiverton Rescue. 

A second victim, an 87-year-old man, sustained significant injuries, according to spokesman Capt. Michael O'Brien.

The elderly victim is listed in "fair condition" at this time at Rhode Island Hospital, said a hospital spokesperson Thursday afternoon. 

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate this man from his vehicle. The extrication lasted 20 minutes, according to O'Brien. 

The fire department received multiple 911 calls simultaneously about the accident. There were only three Portsmouth firefighters available to respond due to previous emergency calls. 

An off-duty firefighter from the Middletown Fire Department stopped and provided assistance.
