Fundraiser for Portsmouth Dog Park is Oct. 25

The event features live music, wine and dogs are welcome.

A fundraiser for the Portsmouth Dog Park being built at Melville Park will be held on Oct. 24 at Greenvale Vineyards at 582 Wapping Road.

The dog park has been in the works for some time, most recently with the help of a team of goats who munched away brush to clear up the property (and at a much lower cost than using mechanical equipment.)

The Portsmouth Town Council approved the location of the dog park near the entrance of Melville Park in April. In May, a restricted account was set up to collect donations to pay for the work needed to complete the clearing and construction needed at the two-acre site before it finally opens for dogs and their owners.

The total cost for the project is expected to run upwards of $70,000.

The council has yet to approve a final design, which should include benches, walking trails, enclosed fencing and areas for rest and repose.
