Get Out! Spring into Action with Egg Hunts, Earth Day Events

Spring into action this weekend and enjoy the many events to offer in and around Newport County.

Spring is in the air! This weekend marks Palm Sunday, the start of Earth Day celebrations, Spring into Art week and school vacation.

There's so much to do in and around Portsmouth this week. Here are a few great suggestions we've collected for you.

  • Be the first to see "A Patch of Earth"
    When/Where:
      Roger Williams University Performing Arts Center, Ferry Road, Bristol, April 15-16 at 7:30 p.m., April 17 at 2 p.m.
    Why Go
    : See the debut of a new play. Written by Kitty Felde, this drama is inspired by the story of a young, guilt-ridden soldier who pleaded guilty to war crimes because of his participation in the 1995 Srebrenica Massacre, during which more than 7,000 Muslim men and boys were killed by Serbian forces.
    Pricing: $10 general admission; $5 for students and senior citizens.

  • When/Where
    : , 2575 East Main Rd, Portsmouth, April 16, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    Why Go
    : The Portsmouth Conservation Commission and Solid Waste/Recycling Committee are co-hosting an Earth Day celebration in the Clements' Market parking lot.

  • Bask in Daffodils
    When/Where
    : 304 Bellevue Ave., Newport (Bellevue House), Sunday, April 17, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
    Why Go
    : Can't think of a more lovely way to spend a spring Sunday afternoon! At this Secret Garden Tour event, enjoy the beautiful and celebrated garden of Ron Fleming’s Bellevue House, where you can sit in the garden featuring 9,500 daffodils, sip mimosas and enjoy demonstrations of gourmet food and and wine tasting, organic honey tasting, silent auction, tarot cards and number readings, music, musical performances and more. For the 28th year, the proceeds from the Secret Garden Tour will benefit Arts Education in Aquidneck Island Public Schools.
    Pricing:  $20 ahead; $25 day of the tour.
  • Mustard's Retreat
    When/Where
    : , 933 Anthony Road, Portsmouth,  April 16,  8 p.m.; doors open at 7 p.m.
    Why Go
    : Great music, locally. Common Fence Music presents the Picnic Series. BYOB and food. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the pre-show "Folk tail-gate party." Show starts at 8 p.m. Mustard's Retreat is a folk and old time duo.
    Pricing
    : $20

  • When/Where
    : , 100 Ochre Point Ave., Newport, (Ochre Court), April 17, 2 to 4 p.m.
    Why Go
    : Great music, for a good cause. The Mosaic Club is hosting "Celebrate Spring," a benefit concert. The Larry Brown Swinglane Orchestra will play under the direction of Jack Rodway and will feature singers Jimmy Winters and Carroll Venable. The proceeds from this event will benefit high school seniors on Aquidneck Island through scholarships in the form of book awards. Cash bar for wine; soft drinks and water, crackers and cheese will also be available. Tickets available at the door.

    : $15; children under 12 free
  • Spring into Art Week
    When/Where
    :  The week of April 16-23, various locations throughout Newport County area.
    Why Go
    : Celebrate arts, music and cultural events during Spring Break Week. Lots of variety, lots of venues.

  • An Egg Hunt of a Different Color
    When/Where
    : , 1401 Hope St., Bristol, April 16, 9:30 a.m.
    Why Go
    : Bring the kids and join Audubon for a funm alternative to the same old Easter Egg Hunt. Children, ages 3 to 10, hunt for brown eggs in a natural setting and quickly learn how well the eggs camouflage. Children trade found eggs for a prize to take home, with special grand prizes going to the finders of the "golden eggs." Participants should bring a basket for their hunt. This event is held rain or shine. Check in begins at 9:30 a.m. Egg Hunt starts promptly at 10 a.m. Registration is required. To register, call (401) 949-5454, ext. 3041, or e-mail programs@asri.org.
