Dist. 71 Candidate Requests Recount in House Race
The recount should not postpone certification of votes for local races, said the town clerk Monday night.
One local House of Representatives' candidate has requested a recount of votes from last Tuesday's election.Â
George S. Alzaibak, the Democrat candidate for House seat, District 71, has requested a recount of votes, his wife confirmed Monday evening by telephone.Â
Alzaibak lost in the House race against Republican candidate Daniel P. Gordon Jr. The vote was 2,705 or 50.5% of the vote for Gordon, while Alzaibak received 2,654 or 49.5% of the vote.

"He (Alzaibak) is within the parameters," said Gordon when reached by telephone Monday evening.
When asked what he thought about the request for a recount, Gordon said, "Despite my opponent's unamicable attitude during the election, I fully support the rules and regulations of the Board of Elections."

The recount will take place this Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 3 p.m. at the Board of Elections' office, 50 Branch Ave., Providence.
Candidates throughout the state have until 4 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 9, to request a recount.
District 71 includes the communities of Little Compton, Tiverton and Portsmouth.
The recount will not postpone any certification of votes for local races, according to to the Portsmouth town clerk. If there are no recounts requested for local races, such as School Committee and Town Council, the votes for these races will be certified tomorrow after 4 p.m.
If there are no recounts requested, the newly-elected Town Council members are expected to be sworn into office on Nov. 15.
