June PEDC Meeting Recap

June PEDC Meeting Recap

In an open session at Portsmouth Town Hall earlier this month, the Portsmouth Economic Development Committee (PRDC) met and elected John Lane McMahon as Vice Chair of the PEDC. John has been a resident of Portsmouth for 47 years is also a member of the Glen Manor House Authority.

The PEDC also initiated a SWOT analysis for the town, which will serve as a building block in the development of the Economic Development Section of the Comprehensive Community Plan for the Town of Portsmouth. The committee discussed a wide variety of strengths and opportunities Portsmouth has going for it, including: scenic open spaces, strong culinary and agri-tourism potential, high traffic flow coming through town roads, an abundance of productive farmland and coastline, proximity to attractions, strong military family presence, a rich local history and much more.

The committee also discussed the potential for the Glen Manor House and Melville Campgrounds, two of the most important town-owned properties that some think are going under-utilized. All committee members agree better engagement with the Portsmouth Business Association, Historical Society and other town committees is necessary in order to ensure economic growth is sustainable and has the full support of the community behind it.

All residents of Portsmouth are invited to attend monthly PEDC meetings, typically the third Wednesday of each month; dates and times are listed on the PEDC website, www.portsmouthriedc.com. Residents with ideas or feedback for the PEDC are welcome to email them to ideas@portsmouthriedc.com.
