Local Man Indicted on Child Molestation Charges

Jose Vega of Portsmouth is accused of assaulting a person, age 14 or younger.

Jose Vega, 39, was indicted recently on one count of first-degree child molestation; three counts, second-degree child molestation; and two counts of simple assault.

Vega will be arraigned on the charges later today in Newport County Superior Court.

The indictment was handed down on July 9 by a Newport County grand jury.

Vega, whose last known address is 71 King Phillip St., is accused of committing one crime of first-degree child molestation and one crime of second-degree child molestation between April 1, 2004, and May 31, 2006.

Vega allegedly committed two crimes of second-degree child molestation between the dates of Aug. 1 and Sept. 1, 2001.

All of these alleged crimes involve a victim, 14 years of age or under, and took place in Portsmouth.

It also is alleged that the defendant committed two crimes of assault between Jan. 1 and 31.

Portsmouth police conducted the investigation.
