Lusi Leaves Post, School Committee Postpones 'Late School Start' Decision

Dr. Susan Lusi's last School Committee meeting took place Tuesday night.

Dr. Susan Lusi’s last Portsmouth School Committee meeting took place Tuesday evening. Lusi received a standing ovation from the nearly 40 people who attended the meeting.

“I’ve enjoyed my time in Portsmouth enormously and I want to thank the school committee, the community and the whole staff of the Portsmouth School Department, and I look forward to seeing them soon because I won’t be far away,” Lusi said.

In January, Lusi she would not ask for a renewal of her current contract. Since that time, she has accepted the position of interim superintendent of Providence schools.

On June 14, the school committee announced the hiring of , who will move to Portsmouth from Illinois.

Lusi presented the results from the .

“There is strong support, but there are also strong concerns,” she said.

Lusi recommended the committee wait to move on the issue to allow the newly-appointed superintendent, Krizic, to have the opportunity to review it.

The school committee voted 6-0 to postpone the decision. Chairwoman Cynthia Perrotti was absent.

New dress code to be discussed in July

Also delayed was a decision to move forward with the adoption of new dress code language. The dress code will be discussed again on July 22.

Committee member Marilyn King said she would review it with high school Principal Robert Littlefield for his input.

Steve Trezvant appointed as PHS athletic director

Steve Trezvant was appointed to the permanent position as Portsmouth High School’s athletic director.

Trezvant has been the interim director since Mike Lunney left earlier this year. 

Lunney left his longtime post at PHS for a position as assistant to the director of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

The school committee also accepted the retirement of Head Custodian Duane Frank. Frank has spent the last 47 years working in the school district.
