Parking Ban Begins Noon Saturday in Portsmouth

Another weekend, another storm, another parking ban.

In advance of yet more wintry weather heading our way this weekend, the Portsmouth Police Department has instituted a parking ban that will go into effect at noon on Saturday and will last until noon Sunday.

“We appreciate your cooperation, and will work with the other town employees to clear the roadways and other traffic hazards as quickly as possible,” the department said in a post on its Facebook page. “ Thank you for your help and please stay safe during the snow storm.”

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the region beginning 1 pm. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm will bring snow and freezing rain and accumulations will range from a half inch to two inches of snow.

The biggest problem from the storm will be a transition to freezing rain Saturday night, which will likely ice over and create slippery roads and hazardous travel conditions.

There is also a serious risk of structural collapse for roofs that have accumulations of snowpack.

“Rain alone presents the threat of urban poor drainage flooding as drains are snow clogged,” the weather service said.
