Police Log: Man Arrested for Allegedly Stealing, Operating Boat While Intoxicated

Bryan Conrad, 30, of 83 Narragansett Boulevard, was arrested early Thursday morning around 5 a.m. after he allegedly stole a small motorboat and took it for a spin while intoxicated, police said.

Officers responded around 3:45 a.m. to Common Fence Point to investigate a report of the suspicious operation of a boat. A witness reported seeing a small watercraft traveling at a slow speed along the coast near Anthony Road.

Upon arrival to the area, police discovered the small motorboat beached not far from Anthony Road and Narragansett Boulevard.

"Conrad was found coming from the area," said Det. Lt. Brian Peters of the Portsmouth Police Department. "His pants and shoes were both wet."

The motorboat, a 1966 Sears Runabout, was taken from Brewers Sakonnet Marina, police said. The watercraft belonged to an East Providence resident, who, according to police, did not give the suspect permission to take the boat out of the marina.

Conrad was charged with larceny of a watercraft, a felony. He was also charged with operating a boat while intoxicated (BWI) and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

The suspect was given a field sobriety test at the scene, which he failed, police said. He also refused a chemical test at the police station, according to Peters.

Conrad was transported to Second District Court for arraignment Thursday morning. He pleaded "not guilty" to the charges.

A felony screening is scheduled for Sept. 30.
