Portsmouth Fire Responds to Tiverton Water Rescue

A Tiverton firefighter and unidentified man were transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Crews from the Portsmouth Fire Department responded to a water rescue Thursday morning in Tiverton across the water from Island Park.

The call was first reported at 10:30 a.m. A vehicle heading north on Main Road in Tiverton left the roadway for an unknown reason.

The pickup truck traveled through a grassy area and drove 20-30 feet off a rock cliff into the Sakonnet River.

"The truck may have rolled at least once, but landed on all four tires," said Josh Ferreira of the Tiverton Fire Department.

The driver was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. His name is not being released at this time.

A firefighter from the Tiverton Fire Department was also injured at the scene. Upon arrival, the firefighter was walking down the grass hill, lost his footing and fell 20 feet down the cliff, according to Ferreira.

The firefighter was also transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of a head injury and lacerations. "We heard he is doing well," Ferreira said.

Responding to the scene were crews from the  Tiverton, Portsmouth and Fall River, MA, Fire Departments. Crews from Westport, MA, manned the Tiverton station during the response.

Lights from the fire engines could be seen across the Sakonnet River from Teddy's Beach.
