Portsmouth Grocer named Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year

Portsmouth's John H. Wood II, owner of The Green Grocer, was named the state's Veteran-owned Small Business of the Year by the Rhode Island Small Business Association recently.

The Town Council will recognize Wood, who opened the business in 2007 with his wife, Aly, with a ceremony and commendation at Town Hall tonight (Monday).

The business specializes in organic and natural products and Wood, a Gulf War veteran, has made sure the focus hasn't wavered.

Don't expect to find hormones, high-fructose corn syrup or dyes and chemicals in anything at the store, located at 934 East Main Road.

Wood served for three years in the Army and was in Iraq for operation Desert Storm.

Upon his return, Wood suffered from Gulf War Syndrome, which prompted him to eat healthy foods.

In a proclamation to be entered into the town's record, the Town Council "extends their sincere good wishes to John Wood II."

Offer your congrats to Wood and his team in the comments below!
