The Portsmouth History center project at the Portsmouth Free Public library has moved a step closer to opening with the signing of a contract between the Portsmouth Library/375th Legacy Committee and Digital ARK of Providence, RI to begin digitizing selected historic library documents and creating a website for their display. This contract will provide options for professionally digitizing selected documents, maps and photographs in order to preserve and protect them as well as making them available for access by the public.
The Portsmouth History Center project is a legacy program of the 375th Celebration Steering Committee and is being supported by the funds remaining in the 375th Anniversary fund after all 375th bills have been paid, approximately $20,000. A library committee comprised of members of the Library, the 375th Legacy group and the Portsmouth Historical Society, will oversee disbursements from this fund in support of the establishment of a History Center in the Library for the storage, display and access of important Town historic documents. In addition to a planned multi-year contract for digitization services, this will include the acquisition of the technology needed to support the History Center.
