Portsmouth Man Accused Of Breaking Into Cars, Stealing Valuables

Police said the arrest stemmed from several reports of valuables being stolen around Portsmouth.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — A Portsmouth man was arrested Wednesday after police said he broke into and stole items from several cars around town.

Matthew Schmidt, 34, was charged with breaking and entering, larceny over $1,500, fraudulent use of credit cards, tampering with vehicles and receiving stolen goods.

Police said the arrest stemmed from several reports of valuables being stolen around Portsmouth. Officers searched Schmidt's home and found large quantities of stolen items, police said. Police did not specify what was stolen.

Schmidt was arraigned in 2nd District Court in Newport Thursday morning.
