Portsmouth Man, Alleged Jewelry Thief, Held on Bail After High Speed Chase

A Fall River woman and a Portsmouth man were held on $25,000 surety bail after leading police on a high-speed chase.

Warren Police have charged a Portsmouth man and a Fall River woman in connection with that high-speed police chase that occurred Wednesday afternoon.

The driver of the vehicle, Mark Almeida, 53, of 1239 Anthony Road, in Portsmouth, as well as the passenger in the vehicle, Robin Roy, 46, of 939 Bedford St., in Fall River, were taken into custody following the chase through Bristol and Warren. The two were allegedly fleeing the scene of a breaking and entering.

According to police, Almeida was charged with breaking and entering a dwelling, conspiracy, possession of heroin and leaving the scene of an accident to an attended vehicle. Roy was charged with breaking and entering a dwelling, conspiracy, possession of heroin and operating after suspension. Both were transported to District Court on March 3, and were arraigned before Judge Elaine Bucci, who held each on $25,000 with surety bail. According to police, both have a significant criminal history.

According to a release, at approximately 2:18 p.m. Wednesday, Warren Police were dispatched to a residence on Schoolhouse Road for a complaint of a breaking and entering incident in progress. Upon arrival, officers allegedly met with the homeowner who reported she found an unfamiliar vehicle in her driveway when she returned home with her children and other family members after picking them up from school.

The release states that upon entering the driveway, the woman was met by another woman who approached her asking for directions. At the same time a man allegedly exited her residence from a side door and ran to the parked vehicle. The woman then allegedly got into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and fled.

According to police, the resident gave officers a description and partial plate of the vehicle, so police sent out a radio broadcast to their units as well as those in surrounding towns. Shortly after, Bristol Police allegedly reported that they were in a pursuit of a vehicle matching the description provided.

The release states that Bristol Police reported that the man and woman were throwing objects appearing to be jewelry from the moving vehicle. According to the release, the pursuit continued throughout the town of Bristol and eventually was reported heading back into the town of Warren on Main Street, then the suspects vehicle turned onto Vernon Street.

According to Bristol Police Lt. Steven Contente, the vehicle struck a Bristol Police cruiser who was stopped at the intersection of Metacom Avenue and Vernon Street. Lt. Contente stated that the vehicle was stopped after three Bristol Police cruisers boxed it in near Homestead Avenue. 

According to the release, there were no injuries reported and most of the stolen jewelry stolen was later located, scattered in various locations along the pursuit route as well as in the vehicle and in Almeida and Roy's possession.
