Portsmouth Named Safest City In RI By New Ranking

A new survey ranked the safest cities in Rhode Island. See what else made the list.

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. -- Portsmouth is Rhode Island's safest city, according to new data released by review site safehome.org. The organization ranked the top-25 safest cities in Rhode Island.

Portsmouth earned a safety ranking of 90.44 out of 100, ranking it within the top fifth percentile in the country. The score takes into account factors such as population size, number of violent crimes, the ratio of police officers to citizens and more.

Narragansett and Burrillville came in next on the ranking, earning scores of 90.08 and 89.96, respectively.

Newport and Providence bring up the end of the ranking at numbers 24 and 25.

"Rhode Island has three of the top 500 safest cities in the country," SafeHome wrote. "The 25 safest cities in the state range from a high of 90.44 to a low of 71.91. That is very good and among the highest safety rating range in the nation."
