Portsmouth School Committee Honors Baseball Team

In its first season, the Portsmouth Middle School baseball team won the state championship.

The ’s baseball team was honored Tuesday night for its capture of the Rhode Island 2011 state championship.

The Portsmouth School Committee honored the team during their meeting. This was the first season of play for the team, which is led by head coach Kevin Weaver.

Earlier this month, second-seeded Portsmouth Middle School (14-0) defeated fourth-seeded Feinstein Middle School (13-1) in an exciting 7-5 win.

“I told the boys on the way in from the our ride after winning the championship, we pulled into the parking lot and right before the doors opened up I said, 'Boys, let me have 10 seconds.' And I said, when the doors opened up, there might be some things that come your way and I just want you to know that whatever you get you deserve,” said Weaver.

“Tonight is a just an example of that.Recognition by the school committee is something special that dosen’t happen everyday and these kids have earned that."
