Portsmouth Students to Graduate at St. Michael's Commencement

All 24 eight-graders will graduate on June 8.

The students, parents, families and friends of will honor the twenty-four members of its eighth-grade class of 2011 next Wednesday, June 8, at 11 a.m., under a tent set up on the school grounds. At what will be the school's 73rd commencement, graduates will receive their diplomas from Board President David G. Howe, of Jamestown.

Eighth-grader Stephen DeLeo will deliver the graduation address. Stephen’s parents, Stephen and Julie DeLeo, will deliver the introductory comments. Departing faculty member Anne Richards, who is ending a 21-year run at the school, will deliver the closing remarks.  Dr. Alexis Roettinger, a graduate of the St. Michael’s class of 1989 and is now a practicing surgeon in Newport, will give the commencement address.

Students preparing to graduate next Wednesday are Brendan Barker of Newport, Jake Canepari of Middletown, Caroline Coaty and Reed de Horsey of Newport; Stephen DeLeo of Middletown, Chloë Farrick of Newport, Sam Gallipeau of Middletown, Serena Highley, Zachary Kagan, and Wil Loughborough of Newport; Alexis Mashaw-Williams of Middletown, Amelia McConnell and Hugo Murphy-Avenengo of Newport; Liam O’Regan of Middletown, Luc Parmentier of Saunderstown, Stephanie Petrone and Victoria Read of Newport; Lucy Richards of Middletown, Harrison Robinson of Portsmouth, Marquise Scott of Newport, Merrill Scura of Middletown, Peter Shanley of Newport, Harry Walker of Portsmouth and Taelor Washington of Portsmouth.

In addition to the two dozen diplomas, six awards will be announced. Middle School Head Bob Tavares will hand out the four designated for students, which recognizing either academic excellence or personal contributions to the school community. The remaining two will honor adult members of the St. Michael’s community who, from their donations of time and talents, have contributed to the school community, and moved the school “in a forward direction.”
