Portsmouth's Boy Scouts Troop 82 honors newest Eagle Scout
Justin Perry bestowed prestigious rank of Eagle Scout

In a Court of Honor ceremony at Green Valley Country Club on August 13, 2014, Portsmouth High School senior Justin Perry was awarded Boy Scout’s highest rank achievement, Eagle Scout, by Troop 82 Scoutmaster Justin Mostert. Justin Perry is the son of Captain Raymond Perry (US Coast Guard, retired) and Mrs. Solange Perry. Although recently awarded the rank, Justin actually earned Eagle Scout on February 4, 2014. The ceremonial Court of Honor was delayed so that his mother, who was on international travel, could attend.
A major requirement to achieve Eagle Scout is to develop, coordinate and complete a community service project. Justin designed and created a recreational space overlooking Melville Pond in Portsmouth that includes an open area for general use and an amphitheater with a fire pit at its center. The site was designed to specifications so that it may also serve as a ceremonial circle for Native Americans. The Aquidneck Island Intertribal Indian Council performed a consecration of the circle in which Justin was an honored participant. The project called for coordination between the Portsmouth Town Council, the Melville Pond Committee, the aforementioned Indian Council, and the Portsmouth Department of Public Works. The project was accomplished with donations and a materials discount provided by Home Depot.
A fourth year Boy Scout with Troop 82, Justin Perry has served in various leadership positions: Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and Senior Patrol Leader. Justin is a member of the Boy Scout National Honor Society, the Order of the Arrow. In 2013, he attended the highly selective National Youth Leadership Training and was sought after to become an NYLT Instructor this year. Attending the West Point Camporee several times, Sea Base in the Florida Keys, and the National Jamboree during its inaugural season at the BSA’s new 10,600 acres National Scout Reserve in West Virginia are what Justin considers the highlights of his involvement with Troop 82. Justin recently joined BSA’s Sea Scouts on Cape Cod and is a crewmember of the Sea Scout Ship Nobska. Sea Scouts places an emphasis on nautical skills and encourages youth to take a major role in planning activities on the ships.
