Portsmouth Registrar of Voters, Jacquie Shulz, was our guest on the 20 June edition of Portsmouth this Week (taped on 13 June). With general elections coming up in September, she discussed the key role her Canvassing Office has in overseeing the election process and maintaining voter registration records. She encourages anyone who has a question about their voter registration status to contact her office, by telephone, email or in person to check on it. There is also a need for more poll workers to operate the various polling stations in Portsmouth. These workers received some basic training and are given a small stipend for their work on election day.
Ms. Shultz also discussed some upcoming dates. Those considering a run for office have to file a Declaration of Candidacy by 25 June and nominating papers must be submitted to the Canvassing Office by 11 July. For voters, August 10th is the last day to register to vote in a Primary Election, with a preliminary Voter list Posted at the Canvassing Office on August 15th. Voters can check the list to make sure the information is accurate. The election itself will be held on September 9th.
