School Committee to Vote on Hiring Interim Assistant Superintendent Tonight

The Portsmouth School Committee will meet tonight at Portsmouth High School. The executive session will begin at 6:30 p.m. and be followed by public session at 7:30.

The Portsmouth School Committee will be asked to vote on hiring an interim assistant superintendent of schools at tonight's meeting. 

The appointment is listed on the agenda, which can be viewed at right. The agenda item reads: 

Appt. – Interim Director of Instruction and Assessment. The Superintendent recommends adoption of the following resolution, “that the Committee affirms the Superintendent’s appointment, Recommendation #2-1/10/12, to the position of Interim Director of Instruction and Assessment, effective February 1, 2012.”

The title of "interim director of instruction and assessment" is the formal title for assistant superintendent. There is no mention of assistant superintendent on the agenda. 

Superintendent Lynn Krizic said the appointment's name would be announced during the meeting and she could not release it beforehand.

The previous assistant superintendent, Colleen Jermain, stepped down last October for a position with Providence schools. Jermain served in Portsmouth since November 2004. 

In October, an ad for the position appeared on SchoolSpring.com, a site used by Portsmouth and other school districts to solicit educators and administrative candidates. 

At the time, the qualifications included a minimum of a master’s degree with strong emphasis on curriculum and instruction, five years teaching experience and a minimum of five years of successful administrative experience. The salary range was listed as between $105,000 to $115,000 per year. 

The school committee meeting will begin Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with an executive session, followed by a public session at 7:30 at the library.
