Shers: Jobs is a Top Issue for Portsmouth

A recent article exposed the fact that Raytheon in Portsmouth is 75 % empty and for sale . This should disturb every resident of Portsmouth as well as residents in Newport County.

The second largest taxpayer in Portsmouth is turning out lights . This is the elimination of good jobs!

Many years ago the town fathers in Portsmouth zoned all vacant land of 15 acres or greater on the two main roads commercial or industrial to encourage jobs . Their wisdom has gotten lost over the past 20 plus years .

Special interest groups have gotten their way . Folks - local jobs are critical to the life of the community. It is natural that a good school system, affordable taxes , and jobs create a balanced base where people want to live.

Jobs in our local community are essential for so many reasons. Respecting the past historical events in our area creates tourism but this is not enough. The Naval Base with War College is a significant component to our economy but this is not enough. It is time for a new vision. Thinking outside the box to attract job creators is needed now. We are in competition with many nice places to live . The lights need to be turned back on now or risk them off -- period.
