VIDEO: One of RI's Last Video Stores to Close Its Doors

After 17 years in business, Briggs Video will close its doors this Sunday. Briggs' owner says the closing is due to losing customers to corporate competitors, such as Redbox and Netflix.

In the early 1990s, around 16 small business video stores operated throughout the state. Today, there only remains a few.

On Sunday, one more small video store will close its doors for good.

on East Main Road, believed to be the last video store on Aquidneck Island, will hold its final sale in Portsmouth.

The reason? The small business owner says he can't compete with the larger corporate outlets, such as Netflix and Redbox.

"There are going to be putting two more Redboxes in town...there's no way I can compete with that," says owner Briggs Densmore of Portsmouth.

Densmore talks more about his decision to close the store in the video featured above.

The small video store first opened 17 years ago on Chase Road near the Cox building. Briggs moved the store two years ago to its current location next to  on East Main Road.

The store once served a staggering 5,000 households, says Densmore, but those numbers have dwindled in recent years with residents moving and deciding to use other video outlets.

Densmore says he now plans to take a vacation since he "hasn't had a week off in 17 years."

A final "going out of business sale" will be held this Saturday and Sunday. Members with remaining late video fees have been mailed a notice, Densmore said.
