Why You May Find it Difficult to Phone Town Hall, Police Today
Both Town Hall and the Portsmouth Police Department's telephones will be disrupted for short periods of time today as the town switches to a new carrier.
If you phoned or the today and heard "Your service provider cannot reach the number you dialed," you were not alone.
Telephone lines for town departments, including police, are experiencing brief disruptions today as the town switches to a new telephone service provider—Cox Communications.
"They are promising only short periods of disruption today, about 20 minutes," said Town Administrator Robert Driscoll. "It's supposed to be brief."

The telephone work is expected to be completed today. The town will switch to the new provider within the next few days.
In the event of an emergency, residents may still call 9-1-1.
