📰 News we're reading

• Beloved Providence bar fights to stay open (turnto10.com) — Nick-A-Nee's, a beloved Providence bar of more than 30 years, is fighting to survive after rising property taxes pushed rent to $1,800 a month and left the owner behind on payments. Supporters have launched a GoFundMe that's surpassed its initial goal, hoping to keep this Providence gathering spot open as its lease expiration in February looms.

• Providence Journal Announces It Is No Longer Printing Every Day (golocalprov.com) — Providence readers will soon see fewer print editions of the Providence Journal, which has announced it will skip printing on certain holidays and already shifted its press operations from Providence to New Jersey. With print circulation sharply down and some subscribers now getting papers by mail a day late, local access to timely print news is increasingly limited.

• Former Santander employee sentenced for $126,000 fraud involving Rhode Island senior (shrewsburypost.com) — A federal judge in Providence has sentenced an East Providence man to 30 months in prison for stealing more than $125,000 from a 78-year-old customer with dementia. Prosecutors say the former Santander employee secretly enabled online access, redirected checks, and used a debit card and wire transfers, including to Portugal, and must repay $126,000 and serve supervised release.
