Back To School In Providence: Speed Cameras Back, Scenes From Day 1

It's back-to-school day in Providence on Monday, and the public school district is sharing scenes from the morning.

PROVIDENCE, RI — It's the first day of school for students in Providence, and the district is sharing scenes from the day across social media.

In addition to students returning to classrooms, speed zone cameras have been returned to their operational state, meaning it's more important than ever for drivers — and their wallets — to heed school zone speed limits.

Superintendent Javier Montañez and Rhode Island Department of Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green were present in Providence today to welcome both students and staff back for the first day of classes.

Both started their day at the bus yard before school visits, according to the public school district.

They both made their way from there to DelSesto Middle School to welcome students back.

In an interview with WJAR, Infante-Green spoke to staffing issues that are affecting the state, adding that they're working hard to add incentives to attract teachers.

Speed Zone Cameras

School zone speed cameras will be turned on for the first time since the end of the prior school year Monday. State law requires that those cameras are turned off once the school calendar ends.

Tickets will be issued for those speeding through school zones between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to ABC 6.
