Emily's List Endorses Nirva LaFortune For Providence Mayor

PROVIDENCE, RI — Emily's List, the national organization putting their support behind pro-choice political candidates, has entered the picture in Providence's mayoral race.

The organization endorsed Nirva LaFortune on Friday morning, in addition to an endorsement for Victoria Gu in Senate District 38.

In support for LaFortune, the group said:

"LaFortune has been a force for positive change as a council member for Providence's 3rd Ward since 2017. In that time, she has championed affordable housing, community development, and public education. We are proud to support her groundbreaking mayoral candidacy and can't wait to see what she accomplishes next."

LaFortune has listed her top priorities on her campaign website, which can be found here. They include:

• Reduce violence in the City of Providence.
• Tackle the housing affordability crisis facing our City.
• Work to transition our schools back to the City.
• Lay out guidelines, demands, and “rules of engagement” for the PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) negotiations.

Post-inauguration, LaFortune said she will establish four task forces around these issues:

• A Safe, Vibrant, and Affordable Providence Full of Opportunity
• Providence Public Schools’ Transition, Improvement, and Infrastructure Upgrades
• PILOT Renegotiations and Holding Our Major Non-profits Accountable
• Our City’s Future: A Resilient, Just, and Sustainable Providence
