Feds Seek $632k From Convicted Kidnapper And Killer: Report

Louis D. Coleman, 36, was sentenced to life in prison in October for kidnapping resulting in the death of 22-year-old Jassy Correia.

PROVIDENCE, RI —Federal prosecutors are asking that a man who kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and brutally killed a woman in 2019 pay her daughter more than $630,000 in restitution, WPRI reported Tuesday, citing a new court filing.

The man, 36-year-old Louis D. Coleman III of Providence, was sentenced to life in prison in October after being convicted of kidnapping resulting in the death of 22-year-old Jassy Correia, according to the United States Attorney's Office.

Most of the money requested of Coleman would go to Correia’s daughter, who was two years old when Coleman murdered her mother, the filing said, according to WPRI.

The amount represents restitution for “financial losses to the victim’s daughter, for the victim’s funeral expenses, and for the victim’s family’s court travel costs,” the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney’s Office told the outlet.

According to the United States Attorney's Office, Correia was abducted from outside a nightclub in the early morning hours of February 24, 2019 after Coleman tricked her into believing he was going to give her a ride back to her friend's apartment but took her to his own apartment instead.

Four days later, Delaware authorities stopped Coleman's car on Interstate 95 South near Wilmington, according to the attorney's office. Officers asked Coleman if anyone else was in his vehicle, to which he replied "She's in the trunk," the attorney's office said.

According to to evidence and testimony presented at trial, the medical examiner determined that Correia died of strangulation and there were signs of sexual assault, according to the attorney's office.

“Jassy Correia was a vibrant and beautiful 22-year-old woman and mother of a toddler daughter. Louis Coleman, a total stranger to her, abducted her, raped her and strangled her to death," said First Assistant United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy after Coleman's sentencing.

In the legal filing, prosecutors acknowledged that due to Coleman's sentence, he will likely never be able to pay the restitution in full and called it "largely symbolic," according to WPRI.

Next, a federal judge will decide whether to approve the request for restitution.
