Providence Man Defrauds Home Depot Of More Than $600K: DOJ

A Providence man entered a guilty plea for a scheme that defrauded the store of more than $600,000 in building supplies, the DOJ said.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A Providence man admitted to using stolen or fraudulently created business credit accounts to defraud Home Depot of more than $600,000, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Rhode Island said.

Luiyi Taveras-Garcia, 35, pled guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in what officials called a "wide-ranging" scheme to defraud the company while purchasing hundreds of thousands of dollars in building equipment.

Taveres also admitted that he purchased construction materials for use in his roofing business from another member of the conspiracy who obtained the materials from Home Depots with the use of stolen credit information, officials said.

He is scheduled for sentencing on Dec. 15.

A second defendant charged in this matter, Abel Bier Romero, 29, of Cranston, is awaiting trial on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft.
