Providence Man Will Serve 25 Years For 2021 Shooting With Illegal Gun

A 20-year-old Providence man was sentenced to 25 years in state prison for an August 2021 shooting which seriously injured one person.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A 20-year-old Providence man was sentenced to 25 years in state prison for a 2021 shooting which seriously injured one person, Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced on Thursday.

Nashon Causey, 20, pled no contest to charges of assault with a dangerous weapon resulting in serious injury, discharge of a firearm resulting in injury and carrying a pistol without a license.

Causey was sentenced to 45 years, with 25 set to be served at Rhode Island's Adult Correctional Institutions with 20 years suspended with probation.

During their investigation, detectives from the Providence Police Department determined that Causey and a co-defendant, Kurtis Lassiter Jr., were arguing outside a restaurant on Chalkstone Avenue on Aug. 12, 2021.

The argument escalated and Causey fired three shots at the victim from a semi-automatic handgun, striking him once in the abdomen, officials said.

Causey and Lassiter ran from the scene and discarded the handgun in a storm drain. The weapon hasn't been recovered, police said.

The victim underwent surgery for their injuries, but survived.

On Aug. 26, 2021, members of the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Causey at a home on Orms Street, where investigators found him hiding in the attic. On Sept. 21, 2021, the Providence Police Department apprehended Kurtis Lassiter.

The case against Kurtis Lassiter remains pending in Providence County Superior Court.

“In each and every case involving gun violence, there is a victim, family, loved ones, and a community whose lives are forever altered, the only variable is to what degree,” said Attorney General Neronha.

“This Office is committed to seeking justice on behalf of those who have been harmed by gun violence, and I believe that the significant sentence handed down by the Court today represents just that.
