Child Helps Save 7-Year-Old Woonsocket Girl Nearly Drowned in Hotel Pool

Smithfield Fire Chief Robert Seltzer said the 7-year-old was face down in the pool when another youngster realized something was wrong.

SMITHFIELD, RI— A youngster is recovering at Hasbro Children's Hospital from a near-drowning, and she has another child to thank for saving her.

She also had help from her grandmother who resuscitated her while emergency medical workers were en route, said Smithfield Fire Chief Robert Seltzer.

Seltzer said he and the EMS crew are going to try to track down everybody who was involved in that rescue.

"They did very well," he said indicating the children responded fast. He was not sure if the youngster or youngsters who helped rescue the girl were relatives. But the family is from Woonsocket, he said.

"We're going to do something to recognize the grandmother and the children involved," he said. Typically, a little ceremony happens at a town meeting. However, if the people don't want to appear, the Town will send them some type of recognition

The Smithfield Fire Department was called to the Holiday Inn Express on Thursday night when the 7-year-old was discovered lying face down in the swimming pool.

Another child-- or several children -- sprang into action, and the grandmother was able to provide first aid until the rescue workers arrived.

The child is expected to be fine.
