Police Cautious On Social Media Posts About Attempted Abduction In Greenville

Police say they don't have enough evidence to confirm there was an attempted abduction but commend the teen for doing the right thing.

SMITHFIELD, RI — Police responded to a Greenville home on Monday night around 8 p.m. for a report about a suspicious vehicle. Details about the episode have since been posted on social media warning about an attempted child abduction. Although officers say they don't have enough evidence to confirm there was an attempted abduction, they commend the teen for doing the right thing.

Here is what we know.

A teen was gardening in her yard on Fairview Drive. An older model silver car with a black rear bumper stopped, and she heard someone exit the car. She ran in the house, and the person drove away.

"While considered suspicious, there are no specific facts, at this time, to suggest that this was an attempted child abduction," police said. Officers checked the area, could not locate the vehicle, and did not have a description of the vehicle’s occupants.

"However, it is important to note that the involved child trusted her gut instinct; that was, to get away from a situation which made her uncomfortable, and that was the correct thing for her to do," police said.
