Scotties, a leader in the tissue industry, is pleased to announce the top 12 finalists in its TREES ROCK! video contest including a group of 3rd graders from R.C. LaPerche Elementary School in Smithfield, RI. The Grand Prize winner will receive $10,000 for their school to use towards a sustainable project, such as tree plantings, updated / recycled playground equipment and energy efficient lighting. Kids who entered the contest were required to create a 3 minute video on the importance of trees -- to themselves, to their school, and to their community.
Upon hearing they were finalists, one third grade student proclaimed “I have to tell my mom, dad, uncle, and everyone I know! Oh my gosh! There’s so much to do and I have no time! I’m even [going to] tell my dog to vote!”
In their video, the student’s talk about a volunteer mom who dedicates much of her free time to making their school look and feel beautiful with plants, trees, and flowers. She comes to every classroom in the spring and helps the 230 students plant vegetable seeds. Then the seedlings go to her home where they are nurtured until the Science Fair in May when the plants are sold to fund the purchase of school supplies. Unfortunately this mom will be leaving the school soon – and the children want to use the prize money to continue the program in her absence and in her honor.

If they won, the students want to build a greenhouse to continue growing plants and raising money for their school.
Students were encouraged to be as creative as possible in their entries – for example, by creating a poem, a play, a speech, a song, or a dance. After rigorous scrutiny by a panel of judges, entries from around the country were narrowed down to the 12 best in the categories of most compelling relative to theme, clarity of message, and creativity.
