SMITHFIELD, RI — A Smithfield man who was charged with animal cruelty last March after police found more than two dozen dogs and over 100 snakes and rats has been sentenced to probation.

Michael Ramos, of Smithfield, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading no contest to animal cruelty and conspiracy charges. Ramos will be on probation for 22 months and will need to complete 80 hours of community service.

Last March, Smithfield Police and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals conducted a search warrant at Ramos' home after getting a tip that a large number of animals were being kept in terrible conditions. The animals were removed from Ramos' home and the house was condemned.
