2014 Tiverton High Hall of Fame Inductees Announced
The Tiverton High School Athletic Hall of Fame is pleased to announce its second HOF Class.

The Tiverton High School Athletic Hall of Fame is pleased to announce its second HOF Class. This year’s group features 9 outstanding athletes, the 2006 State Champion Golf Team and a legendary coach. An Induction banquet will be held on October 16th from 6 to 9 at McGovern’s Family Restaurant. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through the Tiverton High Athletic Director’s office at 401-624-8494 ext. 8.

A 1970 graduate and four year starter who lettered in both football and baseball. In football Dave was a throwback to the days of two way players and an outstanding lineman on both sides of the ball. It was however in baseball where he truly excelled. He was a four year starter at catcher and was selected to the R.I.I.L. All State baseball teams in both his junior and senior years. An outstanding defensive catcher with a strong arm he was the team’s leading hitter as well. In his junior year he led the team with a .500 average throughout the regular season and playoffs. He was also the team leader in HRs and RBIs, as the team went undefeated in regular season play before losing in the state final. In his senior year Dave again led his team in hitting and the team extended its league winning streak to 25 games.
Nancy (Holden) Towers

A 1971 graduate she was selected the school’s outstanding female athlete in her senior year. She was a starter on the softball team for 3 years and was selected the team’s MVP in her junior and senior years. She started for the basketball team for three years and again was selected its most valuable player in her senior year. Nancy also played volleyball and was a cheerleader for four years and the head cheerleader in her senior year. Nancy continued her outstanding athletic career at the University of Rhode Island where she played both softball and basketball for three years.
Tim McDermott
Tim played both Basketball and Soccer for four years and emerged as one of the school’s greatest leaders. In basketball he was captain of the 1979 State Champion and Divisional Champion teams. He was named THS’s outstanding player in basketball in both his junior and senior years. He was the Central Division MVP in his senior year. In both his junior and senior year he was selected to the Providence Journal all-division team was all Newport County and all Fall River Herald News. In soccer he was Captain of the 1978 Divisional Champion team and selected to the all division team in both his junior and senior years. He was named to the 1979 Providence Journal Honor Roll as its male representative from Tiverton.
Amy (Costa) Heath
Amy played Field Hockey, Basketball and Softball for four years at Tiverton and she captained all three in her senior year. In Field Hockey she was MVP in her senior year and selected to the All-State and All-Division teams. She would continue her outstanding Field Hockey career at Keene State where she again captained her team and played all four years. In Basketball she was part of the 1984 State Champion Basketball team. In 1985 she was an integral part of a team that was defeated in the semi-finals of the state tourney she selected to the all- division team and was Tiverton’s MVP. In softball she was again selected to the all –division team and capped off her athletic career at Tiverton by being voted most athletic. However her contributions to athletics do not end here. Amy has spent 17 years coaching Field Hockey, Basketball Softball and Lacrosse. She has received Coach of the Year Awards and in 2006 was recognized by National Girls and Women in Sport as the Boston area nominee.
Dan McDonald
Dan graduated in 1983 and is regarded by many to be the school’s greatest men’s basketball player. A 1000 point scorer Dan was also an outstanding point guard whose unselfish play led his team to a State Championship in 1983. He was an outstanding leader who led by example. His hard work and dedication to the game led to his being named first team All-State in his senior year a first for Tiverton Basketball. He was also named to all- division, all county and to the Fall River Herald News teams in his sophomore, junior and senior years. Dan would continue his career at USMMA/Kings Point.
Deanne (Viveiros) Munn
Deanne graduated in 2003 and was a member of the Field Hockey, Basketball and Softball teams. She was a four year field hockey player and captain of her team in 2002. In 1999 she was a member of the State Champion team. Deanne and her team followed that up with another State championship in 2000 and was named to the 3rd team all-division II. In 2001 the team won its 3rd consecutive State Championship and she was named to the All-Division 1st team as well as all-tourney and all scholastic. She capped it all off in her senior year by being named 1st team all-state and chosen to play on team Rhode Island as well as the Region 3 Futures Program and named to participate in the national Field Hockey Festival in California. In Softball she was a part of two State Championships in 2001 and 2002 and was named to the all- tournament team in 2002. In Basketball she was a varsity starter for three years and went to three consecutive quarterfinals. She received a scholarship to play field hockey for Bryant and had an outstanding career where she was a four year starter and the team won the NE-10 Championship and made a Final 4 appearance.
Dan Dufresne
Danny graduated in 1989 and lettered in three sports soccer, basketball and tennis at THS. An outstanding athlete in every sport he played, it was in soccer where he excelled where he was a four year starter for the program. As a freshman starter at forward he was not the “go to” person in that season. That changed dramatically in his sophomore year when he led the team in scoring and was named all-division. He would be named all-division again in his junior and senior years. He led his team with 22 goals in 1987 and the team won the State Championship. He continued to score as a senior again with 22 goals as the team won a second consecutive State Championship compiling a record of 21-0-3. He is the second leading goal scorer in school history with 62 goals and the 14 assists he compiled give him 140 career points. Dan went on two play two years of college soccer at UMass- Dartmouth. In basketball he was a three year starter who helped his tem reach the division two semi-finals and was selected to all-division teams in his junior and senior years and played at UMD in his junior year. In tennis he played for three years under Coach Phillips but had to sit out his senior year due to injury.
Megan (Pawlik) Mello
Megan graduated in 1998. An outstanding athlete, it was in volleyball that she truly excelled. She was part of an amazing run of three consecutive State Champion ships in 1996, 97 and 98. In 1997 the team went undefeated and Megan was selected to the all-tournament team and received the Alice Sullivan Most Valuable Player award given to the outstanding player in the Class B play-offs. In 1998 as the team won its third consecutive championship Megan was again selected the MVP and to the all-tourney team as well. She was selected to the RIIL 2nd team all-state and first team all-division. She went on to play in the World Scholar Games. She continued her career at Rhode Island College where she played for two years. In basketball she played for four years and lettered in two.
Ben Conway
An amazing story, Ben started golfing in his freshman year at Tiverton and in the span of four years became the individual state champion. In 2006 his junior year, he was part of the RIIL State Championship team which is also being inducted in this year’s Hall of Fame. Then in his senior year he won the individual state championship by overcoming a four stroke deficit in the second round of the 36-hole tournament at the Cranston Country Club. Trailing by two strokes with only two holes to play, he birdied the final two holes en route to a par-71 and a two stroke margin of victory. He was also the individual champion of the 2006 High School Challenge Cup and had the best regular season scoring average in the Interscholastic League East Division. He was selected to the all-state golf team twice.
2006 State Champion Golf Team
Led by Matt Sterling’s opening round performance in the state tournament and with outstanding contributions from Ben Conway, Devin Beck and Ethan Bonus the team won its first state title. The team was coached by Tiverton Hall of Fame inductee Andrew Anderson and received valuable contributions from Ryan Hemmingway and Mark Mello on the way to this remarkable achievement as the second team to win an open championship in the school’s history.
Andrew Anderson
Andy coached both basketball and golf in a legendary career at Tiverton High. His basketball teams won six division titles and four state championships as they amassed over 350 victories. He was named coach of the year four times and was elected to the RI Hall Of Fame. In golf his team won the RI State Championship in 2006 and he was named RI Coach of the Year in Golf. Tiverton is forever grateful for his many contributions to Tiverton athletics and for his tireless work with its athletes and the guidance he provided them.
