UPDATE: Car Falls Into Trench At Tiverton's Essex Library [VIDEO]

and were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident at the at approximately 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. A Pontiac car in the library’s parking lot fell into a gully of air conditioning units located parallel with the building.

Tiverton Fire Chief Robert Lloyd said a single female occupant, stated to be in her mid-80s, was taken from the car and transported to Charlton Hospital in Fall River to be evaluated.

The car was removed from the gully a short time after 1 p.m. and the police are currently investigating how it ended up there. Police Chief Thomas Blakey said they withholding releasing the woman's name pending family notification.

Lloyd said firefighters Paul Vollaro and Aaron Almeida, who are also paramedics, were the first on scene. He said they kept the woman calm as they talked her through getting her out of the rear passenger side door. He added the paramedics had to keep the car stabalized while keeping in contact with the woman.

"This is a unique situation," Lloyd said.

Library personnel said the building was evacuated and power was shut down. Head of library adult services and references, Prudence Fallon, and assistant Amy Medeiros described hearing the crashing noise.

"I thought it was a book shelf falling," said Medeiros.

Fallon said that John Fitzgerald, head of circulation, and resident Sue Wilkie, a registered nurse who happened to be at Essex at the time of the accident, ran outside to talk to the woman.

"She was quite calm," Fallon said.

Tiverton Building Official Gareth Eames deemed the library safe, stating that two of the library's four air conditioning units were damaged, but there did not appear to be any further damage.

A specialty rescue unit was called in from Fall River, and Portsmouth, Westport and Fall River fire departments were called in for station coverage.
