Tiverton Little League Opening Day

OPENING DAY FESTIVITIES SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY APRIL 16th 2011

Tiverton Little League will open its 60th season with our Opening Day ceremonies. We won’t drape a huge flag over the outfield wall, mind you… but we will start the season with a bang.

When do we show up?

You will be notified about the picture time for team and individual pictures from your team manager. If you are not notified please contact your team manager. The pictures are taken in advance of the ceremonies, allowing enough time to complete them before we begin to assemble.  You will show up at the field in full uniform at the time listed on the picture forms. Come a little early because parking will be difficult. If you misplace your picture order form, please bring your checkbook and fill out a new form at the fields.

Who takes the pictures?

Captivation Photography, a Tiverton business, takes the pictures. Owner Lori Guillette is a longtime volunteer in Tiverton Little League and SIBA. She has been where you are and has it down to a science. You will be very pleased with the quality and professionalism in which Captivation does business. They also have many different types of packages available for you.

Can we leave after the pictures and return later for the ceremonies?

If you feel you have enough time to do so, we won’t stop you, but please bear in mind…parking will be an issue if you choose to return later on.  It gets mighty crowded as we get closer to the ceremonies. You are probably better served letting the kids join our festivities.  It might be an hour or so before we start after your pictures are finished, but it beats having to park somewhere off the coast of Spain and walking here.

What can we do until the parade starts?

Bring a lawn chair or blanket and catch up with your friends and neighbors and enjoy the sunshine!  We will have a table for the kids with face painting and temporary tattoos.   Bring your camera and take a picture with the Newport Gulls mascot “Gully”!  We will have relay races and more fun activities for all ages from 9:00 – 11:00 am (with prizes)!!  How fast can you pitch???  Join our Radar Gun throwing contest from 9:00 – 11:00 am (prizes will be awarded based on age)!!!  Ok now turn on your camcorders for this activity…. Each half hour from 9:00 – 11:00 am we will have a “closest to the pin tennis ball throwing contest” (prizes will be awarded every half hour)!!  The Tiverton Recreation Committee will have bricks for sale to support the Bulgarmarsh Park Redevelopment plan.  We will have Tiverton Little league apparel available to order.  Feeling lucky???  We will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets throughout the festivities. The winner will be announced during the ceremonies.

We need to feed these children. Will there be food available?

Please.  Are you kidding?  We have two world renowned chefs with a full outdoor grill set up with a ton of food available.  Coffee, donuts, baked goods, cold drinks, hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage and pepper sandwiches all waiting for you!  Bring your appetite!

Can I still sign my child up for a team?

Sure. However the only division where they will be immediately placed is the Tee-Ball Division.  Every other player signing up will have to be placed in a player pool as teams are at the roster limit.  Should a team lose a player for some reason during the season, we will reach into that pool for players.

When does the parade begin?

Oh, we didn’t mention we have an actual parade. Yep. Teams will be asked over the P.A. system to assemble at the girls’ softball field (on the upper level, near the tennis courts) at approximately 11:00 am. Teams will be placed in a pre-determined order by divisions.

Where does the parade route go?

We start at the softball field and proceed down Main Road onto Route 24 and then into downtown Boston. Now put down the phone and breathe deeply, parents, it was a joke.  We will actually start at the softball field and (with police and fire escorts) proceed down Main Road to the entrance of the boy’s baseball field.  The teams will enter the playing field and be placed in a circle around the infield to be introduced to the crowd individually.  We will then proceed with the rest of the program.

How long does it last?

About an hour.  We have a lot of teams.  Bring your cameras and camcorders. When Board members are introduced clap and cheer wildly.

What do we do afterwards?

Some teams are scheduled to play Opening Day.  They will leave to get to their games at the appropriate field right after ceremonies.  Most games will begin at 1 p.m.  If you don’t have a game scheduled, you’re more than welcome to stick around and watch a game.

Do you need any help?

Funny you should ask….uh…YES PLEASE.  If you would like to be part of the Opening Day Festivities please email us at tivertonlittleleague@gmail.com
