Over the years, St. Patrick’s Day has become more than a day of appreciation for St. Patrick. The holiday has turned into a day to celebrate all things Irish.

Rhode Island should have no problem getting into the Irish spirit. About17.9 percent of Rhode Island residents claimed Irish ancestry, the second most popular ancestry in the state, according to census data.

While everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, how many people in Tiverton and Little Compton have some Irish in them every day of the year?

The U.S. Census Bureau reports 21.1 percent of the Tiverton population and 20.4 percent of the Little Compton population claims Irish ancestry. Of a cumulative population of 10,835, about 2,262 people in Tiverton and Little Compton are Irish.

Tuesday, March 17 isn’t the only day to appreciate Irish heritage. The entire month of March was named Irish-American Heritage Month by Congress in 1991.
