Providence Man Dies After Falling Into Work Machine In Tiverton

The man fell into a machine that separates sand from gravel while trying to unclog it, according to police.

TIVERTON, RI — A Providence man died at work Friday in Tiverton when he fell into machinery used to separate sand from gravel, according to police.

Police identified the victim as Selvin Martin Ovando Gamez, 29.

Around 8:35 a.m., police were called to Tiverton Materials on Fish Road for a report of an unresponsive man. Upon arrival, officers found Gamez laying on the ground unconscious.

Emergency officials attempted life-saving measures and rushed Gamez to Saint Anne's Hospital in Fall River, Massachusetts, where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, Gamez was on top of a piece of machinery, which separates sand from gravel. When the machine got backed up, Gamez fell in while trying to unclog it, police said. Gamez was pulled from the machine by his co-workers.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) were notified of the fatal incident.
