Tiverton Art Workshops For Kids

Children can make artwork with materials from nature and recycled materials using various textile techniques.

Children ages 6 to 12 can attend workshops to learn craft and fine art techniques at four Saturday morning workshops starting in November.

Instructor Paula Becker will teach the classes from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Sandywoods, 53 Muse Way.

Becker makes sure her classes are accommodating for all age groups and offers simpler versions of the projects for the younger kids. “I’m really flexible with the kids,” Becker said. “I don’t like to have cookie-cutter projects.”

Individual workshops cost $25 and all four workshops cost $90.

She brings materials collected over the years to the classes so the kids will have nice materials to work with including yarn, beads, buttons and fabric straps.

“I try to give the kids a broad range of materials and techniques they can learn and carry on throughout their life,” she said.

The first class, “A Harvest of Color,” on Nov. 1 will have students create mixed media artwork inspired by autumn colors using materials from nature. Students will paint and cut leaves to create various images.

“Paper Design and Holiday Cards” on Dec. 6 will have students create patterns and designs with colorful paper and paint. “I’ll introduce them to paper weaving to create patterns and use designs for their cards,” Becker said.

“Build a Spaceship and Paint the Stars” on Jan. 10 will have students design and make a spaceship from recycled materials and create a painting of the spaceship.

“Create a Mardis Gras Hat” on Feb. 7 will have students make Mardis Gras hats using a variety of colorful materials and textile techniques. Students will hold a fashion show for parents at the end of the class.

Becker hopes to offer another series in the spring if these winter and fall workshops are successful.

Becker teaches children’s textile arts and drawing workshops for schools, art centers, homeschool groups and private lessons. She previously taught classes at Westport Art Group.

Classroom limit is about 15 children a class.
