A Rhode Island event dedicated to raising awareness and supporting people living with Parkinson's disease will return to Warwick City Park on Saturday, September 26.
The American Parkinson Disease Association Rhode Island Chapter's Optimism Walk & 5K Fun Run brings together people with Parkinson's, families, friends, healthcare professionals and advocates for a day focused on community, education and fundraising.
The event has become one of Rhode Island's largest educational and fundraising events dedicated to Parkinson's disease.
Money raised supports local programs, education, support services and research aimed at improving the lives of people with Parkinson's and their families.
More than 20 community partners are expected to participate, providing information and resources to attendees. The event will also include live music, raffles, a catered lunch and other activities.
This year's event will recognize Slocum Cares and Team Jitter Bobs, led by Chris and Jessica Slocum, in memory of the late Bob Slocum.
The Jitter Bobs have participated in the Optimism Walk for 10 years, beginning after Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson's.
Chris Slocum said the event has become about more than fundraising for the team.
"To us, the walk is as much about the fundraising for the cause as it is to support the community and those struggling with a very difficult disease," Slocum said.
He added that supporting research and efforts to improve quality of life for people living with Parkinson's is an honor for the team.
The decade-long commitment of The Jitter Bobs reflects the larger community behind the event, with teams and individuals returning year after year to support the cause.
Participation in the Optimism Walk & 5K Fun Run is free, and fundraising is encouraged. Participants can walk, run, volunteer or simply come out to support the event.
