WESTERLY, RI — A Westerly teen faces charges after police say he had an illegal sexual encounter with a teenage girl.

Ian Morgan, 18, of 20 Fusaro Ave., Apt. B, turned himself in to Westerly police upon learning there was a warrant out for his arrest, The Westerly Sun reports. Morgan was arraigned before a justice of the peace on a third-degree sexual assault charge and ordered to appear back in court at a later date.

Westerly Police Chief Shawn Lacey said the charges stem from a Feb. 23 complaint made by the mother of a 14-year-old girl, who discovered that her daughter sneaked out her bedroom window and met up with Morgan. Police say Morgan and the girl first met in November through the Snapchat app and met in person on three occasions, most recently on Feb. 19 when police allege the two engaged in a sexual encounter. The age of consent in Rhode Island is 16 years old.
