WESTERLY, RI — The pilot of a small plane was killed in a crash in Westerly Monday, according to reports.
"A Cessna C172 crashed in a field near Westerly State Airport in Rhode Island around 12:05 p.m. local time on Monday, May 18," the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.
"Only the pilot was on board," the statement said. "The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The NTSB will lead the investigation and provide any updates."
WPRI reported the pilot died.
"Westerly police said the incident involved a single-engine plane with a single occupant who was rushed to Westerly Hospital," according to WPRI.
The plane was "coming in for a landing when the crash occurred," according to the Westerly Sun.
The plane's wreckage was at the edge of a field near trees, NBC reported.
"Town Manager Sean Lacey said the pilot was pronounced dead at Westerly Hospital," the NBC story said.
