🌱 Amazon Cloudburst + Ticks In Winter + License Plate Contest

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Woonsocket.

(Patch Media)

Morning, neighbors! Kathleen here with the latest copy of the Woonsocket Daily. I apologize for the late news post but we, at Patch, were also affected by the Amazon outage. I fell asleep at the keyboard last night to get you some news.

First, today's weather:

A p.m. rain or snow shower. High: 41 Low: 26. I'm kind of hoping for snow.

Here are the top stories in Woonsocket today:

  1. A major outage in Amazon's cloud computing network on Tuesday disrupted services for a huge range of U.S. companies for more than five hours. The outage at Amazon Web Services mostly affected the eastern U.S. Airline reservations, car dealerships, payment apps, and video streaming services to Amazon's own e-commerce organization were disrupted. News reporting was at a standstill for many organizations like the Woonsocket Patch. Customers trying to book or change trips with Delta Air Lines couldn't connect to the airline. People trying to use Instacart, Venmo, Kindle, Roku, and Disney+ all reported problems. Even the McDonald's app was down! (Washington Post)
  2. RI has its 1st human case of Jamestown Canyon virus since 2013. "While mosquitoes may no longer be biting after the first hard frost, Rhode Islanders are reminded that we are not 'out of the woods with ticks, which can continue to bite and spread diseases like Lyme Disease, even in winter," said the RI Director of Health (WPRI.com)
  3. The Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles launched a license plate design contest on Tuesday. The winning design will replace the familiar "wave" plates that have been in use for 25 years. Anyone who lives or attends school in Rhode Island is eligible to enter. Submissions can be made through Jan. 7. ( Turnto 10)
