Cumberland Woman Charged With Abusing Young Son: Cops

WOONSOCKET, RI — A Cumberland woman was charged with abusing her young son at a Woonsocket motel, police said.

Elizabeth Jarrie, 23, was charged with second-degree child abuse in connection with the Tuesday evening incident.

An officer sent to the Woonsocket Motor Inn met with Jarrie's father and a woman who said "she was in a relationship with" the father, according to a police report.

The woman "stated they had all been staying at the Motor Inn," the report said, and the father and "Elizabeth had been getting into heated verbal arguments, and they had all been drinking."

"During the course of the argument, (the woman) stated she observed Elizabeth (her son) strike forcefully," according to the report.

Jarrie was gone by the time the officer arrived, the report said, and her father and the woman said she had departed on foot.

Jarrie was spotted soon after at the corner of East School and Rathbun streets and taken to the police station, according to the report.

At the station, a detective interviewed Jarrie and she was arrested on the child abuse charge, the report said.

An officer on the case observed a video provided by Jarrie's father that showed the child "in his playpen throw an object towards Elizabeth," according to the report.

"Elizabeth then proceeded (to) open her hand and extend her arm almost to a fully extended position and swing her arm with an open hand and strike (the child) in the left side of his face, in the video a loud crash sound was heard from Elizabeth striking (her son)," the report said. "Due to the extreme force in which (the child) was struck he was whipped to the floor of the playpen and started crying."

The boy was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, according to the report.

An officer sent to the hospital "observed hand mark imprints around (the child's) arms, legs, back, stomach, and the back
(of) his right side of the head," the report said.
