📰 News we're reading

• Cumberland Woman Charged With Abusing Young Son: Cops (patch.com) — Woonsocket police arrested a 23-year-old Cumberland mother after she was accused of forcefully striking her young son at the Woonsocket Motor Inn, an incident reportedly captured on video. Officers say the child was later treated at Hasbro Children's Hospital for visible handprint marks on multiple parts of his body, and the mother now faces a second-degree child abuse charge.

• Mini soccer pitches open in Woonsocket (wpri.com) — New mini soccer pitches have just opened at Dunn Park on Asylum Street, giving Woonsocket kids and families a fresh place to play three‑on‑three or five‑on‑five games. Backed by Project Goal, Rhode Island FC, and Centreville Bank, the brightly surfaced courts are meant to offer a safe, confidence‑building space for young players to practice and connect.

• Need to Read: Fall 2026 (n-magazine.com) — A fall book recommendation column highlights author Jodi Picoult's new novel and notes that she'll appear in conversation at Woonsocket's Stadium Theatre on September 30. Local readers can hear her discuss themes like trauma, family, and 9/11 while celebrating her 30th book. Tickets and details will matter for fans who want to attend in person.
