📰 News we're reading

1. Woonsocket Council Rejects Flock Camera Ban, 5-1 (upriseri.com) — Woonsocket residents will see Flock license-plate cameras stay up after the City Council voted 5–1 against banning them and canceling the contract. A separate proposal to turn police rules into binding law was tabled, with the sponsor promising to return with a stronger oversight ordinance. Locals can still weigh in when that ordinance appears on a future agenda.

2. Woonsocket Owner Alleges Uneven Code Enforcement (upriseri.com) — A Woonsocket Water Street property owner told the City Council she believes a neighboring bar paved a large lot, built a retaining wall, and added a staircase near the Blackstone River without permits, and questioned why the city hasn't ordered removal. She contrasted strict enforcement on her historic building with what she sees as leniency next door, raising flood and fairness concerns but prompting no immediate council action.

3. Congratulations to September Guess the Toolers (tomorrowstechnician.com) — A Woonsocket Career & Tech Center student, Hank O'Neil, was one of ten winners nationwide in an online "Guess the Tool" contest, earning a $10 gift card. The puzzle series continues this week with a new crossword challenge open to students who submit correct entries by Sunday, Sept. 20, offering another chance for Woonsocket participants to win.

4. Flock Camera Records Raise RI Driver Privacy Questions (upriseri.com) — Woonsocket drivers should know their local Flock camera data may be accessible far beyond city limits, with the town's portal listing agencies including the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and out-of-state departments. A new analysis of a recovered camera and a Cumberland lawsuit suggests these systems capture far more imagery than simple plate snapshots, raising fresh questions about Rhode Island's patchwork rules and cross-border data sharing.

5. WATCH: Body-worn camera video shows NY arrests of Federal Hill bank heist suspects (wpri.com) — A Woonsocket home search played a key role in a high-profile 2023 Providence bank heist investigation, where police say they found safes, cash and distinctive two-dollar bills. Now, new body-camera footage shows federal marshals arresting the two main suspects in New York, who've since been extradited to Rhode Island and pleaded not guilty to fresh charges. The case continues in Superior Court.
