Continuing the Urban Chicken Discussion

Fitchburg, MA is considering a proposal similar to the one defeated by the Woonsocket City Council permitting urban chicken ownership.

In a striking case of deja vu, the city of Fitchburg, MA is considering a petition to allow residents to keep up to 6 chickens on their property.  Unlike the recently defeated proposal that was considered by the Woonsocket City Council, the Fitchburg proposal deals with property of less than 5 acres; if residents own 5 acres or more they can legally own chickens.

In an article that appeared in the April 4 edition of the Sentinel & Enterprise, many of the same concerns raised during the Woonsocket hearing are being echoed in this northern Worcester County community.

The hearing will continue on May 21.

An issue that was not raised, or at least not reported during the Woonsocket debate was the RI regulation requiring the purchase of a minimum of 12 chickens or ducks or turkeys.
