Recently my wife Donna and I went to Northborough in search of Wegmans Supermarket.  A curious way to pass away a few hours but if you are a foodie, it was well worth it.  To say that this store is huge is putting it mildly. At 145,000 square feet, the store is unlike anyother I have ever seen.  Besides the pharmacy, housewares, in store bakery and florist that many supermarkets also offer, Wegmans, a Rochester, NY family owned based chain of 77 stores opened the Northborough store, the first in the region in October 2011. They additionally have specialty departments like cheese, kosher food, a day-boat seafood department, prime, dry aged beef, European style chacuterie and a food court that dawrfs those of most shopping malls.  In Wegmans incarnation there are offerings of sushi, dim sum, Thai, Asian, Indian, pizza, Mexican cuisines next to an impressive salad bar, vegetarian selections, coffee cafe and American classics.  Several are clearly identified  as family-friendly meal packages.

They offer an impressive prepared foods selection as well as “ready to cook” with pre-marinated, preportioned products like seafood, poultry and meat Wegmans easily fits the demographic profile of young, mobile professionals as well as empty nesters.  While some items are pricey, the dedication to quality and variety are clearly apparent.  Not practical for everyday or even weekly shopping from Greater Woonsocket, Wegmans is clearly the choice for special event and holiday shopping.   They also offer a similarly sized full-service liquor store that is competitively priced and features many craft beers.
